We had a lot of fun with our Thanksgiving poems this week!

Here are some pictures of the kids practicing their favorite poems (and making up motions!) in small groups.  After they practiced for a few minutes, they had a chance to perform them for the rest of the class.  It was really fun to see their growth since we last did this in early October.  What  a confident and energetic bunch!

Well, we certainly couldn't have asked for WORSE weather -- but we still managed to have a fantastic first field trip!

Last Tuesday, all 3 first grade classes (and some very dedicated parent volunteers!) braved the wind, rain, and freezing temperatures and headed over to the Critter Barn.  We spent the whole day learning about life on the farm: we talked about what barns/tools/chores were like in the past vs. what they're like now,  what all living things need to survive, why we need/how we use certain animals, how/what the animals are fed, similarities and differences between adult animals and their babies, and how to properly hold and care for many different animals!
We were all a little wet and smelly by the end of the day, but hey, that's life on the farm!

Special thanks to the parent (and grandparent!) volunteers who helped us with Pumpkin Math on Wednesday!

The kids had a great time working in groups, making predictions, and investigating different properties of pumpkins.  They learned about height, weight, circumference, buoyancy, force/motion, and estimating -- and then got to do some carving!  On Thursday, we spent some time discussing, comparing, and graphing their findings.  What a fun hands-on learning experience!
